Why the Twenty-Four Elders Are Not the Church

Revelation separates the twenty-four elders from the redeemed multitude, yet gives the elders white garments, crowns, and throne imagery that may connect them to the faithful saints.

The twenty-four elders should not be flattened into the church as though Revelation explicitly defines the twenty-four elders that way. Revelation does not say, "the twenty-four elders are the church." The text gives the elders a real place in heaven, and the text also distinguishes the elders from other redeemed groups in the same heavenly scenes.

Saying the twenty-four elders are not a symbol for the whole church does not mean the twenty-four elders cannot be included within the larger company of saints. The point is more careful than a simple yes or no. The twenty-four elders are not presented as a symbol for the whole church, but the twenty-four elders may still belong within the larger redeemed company. Revelation gives enough distinction to keep the elders separate from the church as a whole, and Revelation gives enough shared imagery to make their relation to the saints worth noticing. The distinction between symbolizing the whole church and belonging within the larger redeemed company also matters when reading the disputed "us" in Revelation 5:9-10.

The Elders Are Set Apart

Revelation first shows the twenty-four elders in chapter 4:

“And round about the throne were twenty four thrones, and on the thrones twenty four elders sitting, clothed in white garments; and on their heads were golden crowns.”

— Revelation 4:4 (URV)

The Revelation 4:4 image is significant. The elders are seated on thrones. The elders wear white garments. The elders have golden crowns. The throne, garment, and crown details matter. But Revelation 4:4 does not tell the reader that the twenty-four elders symbolize the church. Revelation 4:4 identifies them as twenty-four elders.

Revelation 7 makes the distinction clearer. John sees a great multitude from every nation, tribes, peoples, and tongues standing before the throne and before the Lamb (Revelation 7:9). Then the heavenly court is described separately:

“And all the messengers were standing round about the throne and the elders and the four creatures, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,”

— Revelation 7:11 (URV)

The elders are not simply merged into the multitude. One of the elders even explains the multitude to John:

“And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, These who are clothed in the white robes, who are they, and from where have they come? And I said unto him, My lord, you know. And he said unto me, These are they who are coming out of the tribulation, the great, and have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”

— Revelation 7:13–14 (URV)

The distinction between one elder and the multitude in Revelation 7 leans against making the twenty-four elders a direct symbol of the redeemed multitude. One elder can be related to the redeemed, but the elder is still distinguished from the multitude he explains.

Revelation 19 keeps the same kind of distinction. John hears a great multitude in heaven praising God (Revelation 19:1-3). Then Revelation names the elders separately:

“And the elders, the twenty four, and the four creatures fell and worshipped God who sat on the throne, saying, Amen, Alleluia.”

— Revelation 19:4 (URV)

The multitude, the twenty-four elders, and the four creatures all participate in worship, but Revelation does not collapse the multitude, the elders, and the creatures into one group. Revelation keeps the groups distinguishable.

The Elders Still Carry Church-Related Imagery

The distinction between the twenty-four elders and the church does not mean the twenty-four elders have no relation to the faithful saints. Revelation gives the churches promises that sound close to the imagery seen in Revelation 4.

Christ promises white garments to the overcomer:

“But you have little names in Sardis who have not defiled their garments; and they will walk with me in white: for worthy are they. He who overcomes will so be clothed in white garments; and I will in no way wipe his name from the scroll of life, and I will confess his name before my Father and before his messengers.”

— Revelation 3:4–5 (URV)

Christ also counsels Laodicea to receive white garments:

“I counsel you to buy from me gold fired by fire, that you may grow rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed and that the shame of your nakedness be not made manifest; and eyesalve to anoint your eyes, that you may see.”

— Revelation 3:18 (URV)

Christ promises a crown to the faithful:

“Fear none of the things which you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, that you all may be tested; and you all will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.”

— Revelation 2:10 (URV)

Christ also tells the church in Philadelphia to hold fast so no one takes their crown:

“I come quickly: hold fast what you have, that none take your crown.”

— Revelation 3:11 (URV)

And Christ promises the overcomer a place with Him in His throne:

“Unto him who overcomes will I give to sit with me in my throne, as I also overcame and sat down with my Father in his throne.”

— Revelation 3:21 (URV)

The white-garment, crown, and throne promises do not prove that the twenty-four elders are the church. But the white-garment, crown, and throne promises do show why the twenty-four elders should be taken seriously in relation to the faithful saints. In Greek, the garment language is built on forms of "garment" (ἱμάτιον): Sardis has not defiled its garments, the overcomer is clothed in white garments, Laodicea is counseled to buy white garments, and the twenty-four elders are clothed in white garments. White garments, crowns, and thrones are not exclusive to one group in Revelation. Shared imagery does not erase the distinction between the elders and the church, but shared imagery does allow the twenty-four elders to be related to the faithful saints.

So the study of the twenty-four elders should hold two truths together. Revelation distinguishes the twenty-four elders from the redeemed multitude. Revelation also gives the twenty-four elders white garments, throne, and crown imagery that fits the promises given to the faithful. The twenty-four elders are not explicitly defined as the church, and Revelation's own scenes separate the elders from the larger redeemed company. Yet the twenty-four elders may be connected to the larger redeemed company, perhaps as a position of authority within the whole rather than as a symbol for the whole.

The distinction between symbolizing the whole church and belonging within the larger redeemed company matters. If the twenty-four elders are treated as a symbol for the church, the distinction Revelation makes in chapters 7 and 19 gets blurred. If the twenty-four elders are treated as entirely unrelated to the saints, the white garments, crowns, and throne imagery in chapters 2-4 gets ignored. The more careful reading is to keep the twenty-four elders distinct while allowing that the elders may still belong within the larger company of the redeemed.
